Gene's family encouraged his interest in drawing but like his Irish ancestors he entered public service serving in the military, law enforcement, and eventually the fire service. After retiring in 2004 he reinvented himself by studying the work of established artists and taking classes. His paintings have since won many awards. His first entry was awarded second place in the Palos Verdes Art Center's juried Holiday Show. The following year two more were selected for the prestigious exhibition.
Gene served as President of the Palos Verdes Art Center's Artists' Open Group and has held memberships in the Torrance, CA Artists' Guild, San Pedro Arts Association, South Bay Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society.
He considers himself a landscape artist however he is intrigued by shapes that are not normally found in the watercolor world. Gene recently moved to the Village of Oak Creek near Sedona where his days are filled with observing God's wonderous world and using watercolor to capture the beauty that surrounds him.
